We were narcotics training at a school about six months after I got Deek. He was around 2.5 years old. He found the dope and I was praising him up. I rubbed his head and felt a weird knot right next to his left ear. I took him to the vet and was told it was a cancerous tumor. They did surgery the next morning and found a second tumor right next to his ear. The vendor said he was going to start looking for a replacement dog because these things rarely end well but I loved Deek and I was optimistic. After surgery the vet told me it went well and he was sure he got all of it out. Deek healed up and got a clean bill of health after every check up. I was lucky.
He was a great dog and a huge part of our family even after he retired until he passed away in January of 2013.

K9 officer Deek battled the bad guys and at 2 1/2 he battled cancer and survived it to live a full life with his partner AC. He retired and years later passed away at the age of 12 with his family.
Thank you Officer Deek and Officer AC Sanders for your service to your community and for helping to spread K9 cancer awareness. I’m so happy I was able to meet you when you were in your prime.
